There was a really beautiful message that was woven into a yoga class I took yesterday. The message was about the way Spring doesn’t just unfold linearly, beginning on one day with the clouds of winter clearing away and each consecutive day becoming brighter and warmer. That’s not how nature works.
Instead, Spring will break through the wintery grey one day, or maybe one afternoon, and then retreat. Maybe Spring will come back the next day, or maybe it will be a couple of days, or weeks before we walk outside ad think “wow, it feels like Spring today.” It will carry on like this until, eventually, more and more of these days will string together and suddenly we realize that Spring has become the main seasonal character.
How we do many things in life evolves in a similar way. For example, creating a new habit, let’s say it’s yoga. You want to make yoga a daily habit, so you roll out you mat each day for at least 15 minutes. Then on day, maybe the same week you started this new habit, you miss a day or two. You were tired, sore, got caught up in something else and forgot, whatever the reason, you broke your streak. That doesn’t mean you “messed up” or it’s over.
A few cold rainy days doesn’t mean that Spring isn’t coming. The next day, you do the next thing that realigns you with your intention to create that yoga habit: you roll out your mat again.
It works the same with growth, self-improvement, living intentionally and mindfully, and a million other scenarios. From mundane chores to creating meaningful habits that help you to deepen your human experience, it is all a practice. We are practicing becoming better versions of ourselves, practicing a certain yoga pose, practicing keeping our homes clean, or whatever the goal is.
So, whenever you feel you’ve messed up or you missed a day of (fill in the blank), try rerouting the judgement/guilt/shame train and look forward instead. Seize the next opportunity to realign yourself with that goal. It’s just a rainy day. Spring is still coming.
Namaste
